Super Easy Spring Cleaning DIY’s

Laundry Detergent

Making your own laundry detergent yields many benefits for the environment, your health, and your wallet.  Store-bought laundry detergent contains added toxins that aren’t eco-friendly and can cause skin dryness and discomfort. Homemade detergent is easy to make and will save you a considerable amount of money in the long-run. This recipe is easy and produces up to 52 loads; the average store-bought laundry detergent that costs the same amount as this recipe only yields around 32.

Here are the ingredients that you will need:

½ c. Borax

1 c. Washing Soda

1 Bar Fels-Naptha Soap

3 Gallons of Water

5-Gallon Bucket with Lid

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Use a cheese grater to shred the entire bar of Fels-Naptha soap

  1. Pour 4 cups of water into a large pot and bring it to a boil

  2. Lower the heat to a simmer and add in the Fels-Naptha soap, about a half a cup at a time

* Make sure the water is not still boiling when you add the Fels-Naptha. We made this mistake the first time and it did not turn out well!

  1. Slowly stir the mix in with a wooden spoon until the Fels-Naptha is completely dissolved

  1. Pour 3 gallons of room temperature water into the 5 gallon bucket and stir in borax, washing soda, and the pot of melted soap.  Stir until completely dissolved.

  1. Put the lid on the bucket and let the mixture sit for 24 hours

  1. Stir well before use

*The mix will be a little clumpy the next day and this is okay, just make sure to stir thoroughly before use.

If you are like us, you go through all-purpose cleaner way too fast. It’s a necessity; you can’t go without it. However, buying it every month is bad for the environment and your bank account. With this recipe, you’ll see how simple it is to make your own inexpensive, non-toxic, plastic-free all-purpose cleaner.
