About the Maker

Vintage Furniture Paint.

As experienced furniture painters, we were unsatisfied with the finish and durability of latex, chalk, milk, and acrylic paints. After years of making them work, we set out to create the best furniture paint on the market. We worked with a leading paint manufacturer to create paint with better coverage and finish than any other paint. MudPaint was created in 2014. MudPaint’s smooth buttery finish is unlike any other paint on the market.

MudPaint is a woman-owned small business, owned and operated in Hurricane, Utah. Owner, Emily is from a family of master artisans. To highlight a few, her grandfather was a clockmaker, her grandmother was a painter, and her father was a masonry worker. On a personal note, Emily has diagnosed as a child with Type I Diabetes. When not painting, Emily is helping to educate others on diabetes, is exercising and cooking her own meals to manage her blood sugar levels, and instructs two courses for the University.

Emily loves to create with Mudpaint. About everything you can imagine has been painted with MudPaint. If her dogs weren’t so quick, they would definitely be more colorful. Emily is always on the hunt for something to paint. If there is a yard sale or a thrift store along the way, Emily always stops.

MudPaint’s smooth matte finish is unlike any other furniture paint on the market. It is easy to use, fast drying and adheres to almost any surface. It has great coverage that makes it so most customers only need to use one coat. A little goes a long way. MudPaint has a perfect finish for antiquing and aging.

MudPaint colors can be mixed together to achieve your own custom blends. Easily create different looks with it ranging from a modern solid opaque look, an antiqued look by distressing, a shabby chic finish, to a piece with dimension and interest by layering it.

MudPaint is made in small batches and is offered in 3 sizes; samples, pints, and quarts. It is water-based for easy clean-up. Upon order, every can is hand filled and labeled. We then package everything up and ship it out to you.

Everyone who wants to paint can with MudPaint!

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

How much does one quart of MudPaint cover?

A quart of MudPaint will generally cover about 150 square feet.  Surface coverage depends on your painting style.

How many pieces of furniture can I expect to paint with one quart of paint?

Depending on the size of the pieces and whether or not the surface was primed, a good estimate would be 2-5 furniture pieces or more from one quart of paint.

Do I need to prime the furniture first?

It depends on the surface of the furniture piece. For most furniture surfaces that have been thoroughly cleaned and lightly sanded, you will not need a coat of primer. However if the surface is slick, shiny or smooth, you may want to prime the surface before you paint it to ensure that the paint adheres well. If you do need to prime, MudPaint is compatible with water based primers, cover stain and KILZ. We do not recommend BIN Shellac Primer with MudPaint.

How many coats do I have to apply?

Most users report that only one coat is needed for an even finish. You can always do an extra coat for durability or a coat of clear coat if you would like!

How much drying time should I allow between coats of paint?

We recommend waiting until the first coat of paint is fully dry before painting a 2nd coat.  After the 2nd coat of paint, we recommend waiting 24 hours before applying furniture wax.

How do I prevent a clear coat or light colored paint from yellowing?

Yellowing can occur from the stain and dyes in the previous finish bleeding through. Properly preparing the piece, priming, and/or a darker color paint most often will correct bleed through.

What causes paint cracking?

There are a number of reasons why paint will crack. Poor surface preparation, paint drying too fast, applying a second or third coat of paint before the previous coat dries completely, applying paint too thick, and over-spreading paint.

Why use MudPaint?

MudPaint has great adhesion, great coverage, and a smooth finish. It contains low VOCs and is suitable for use indoors. MudPaint is water based and is easy to clean up with soap and warm water. It’s ease of use and durability make it perfect for all users. With MudPaint, anyone who wants to paint, can!

How to store paint?

  1. If thinning, pour the paint into a container and then add water.
  2. Pour the paint needed into a container and use a clean brush.
  3. If the paint is going to be stored for a while, it can help to lay a piece of plastic wrap on top of the remaining paint down in the can.  Then place the lid on tightly with a rubber mallet.
  4. Store the paint upside down in temperatures 55 – 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
